Parenting: Child-Centered

Child-centered parenting can lead to a spoilt child if one is not careful to know the pitfalls. In the early days of caring for a newborn it's important to get to know your newborn and discern the different cries and what it means. However when the baby grows up and becomes demanding and resists change and correction - the parent has to draw the boundary so child knows who's in authority who's in charge. The child should not be the 'king' or 'queen' of the household.

Reading about the 5-year-old who got gang raped angers me to the core. How could any human have such a depraved mind to commit such a cruel crime. I pray that this girl will survive but more than that, she will heal emotionally and psychologically. This is a instance when bullying of a really horrible kind (refer to my previous post) and we cannot remain bystanders. We should stand up for this girl and really bring justice to her perpetrators.

“Knowing what's right doesn't mean much unless you do what's right.”
― Theodore Roosevelt
Bullying in any form should not be tolerated. As adults, we must ensure and encourage a culture where the bully ought to be corrected. The bystander should be brave, and stand up for the victim. The bystander should also remain passive in speaking up and standing up for the victim especially if they witness it. With this culture, we will see less of bullying at every level, be it the home, the school, the workplace or the community and a nation.

A Simple Idea

I have a dream - to connect couples who so long for children and want to adopt, with the single unmarried teens and young ladies who find themselves pregnant and pondering the difficult decision of abortion. It can be a win-win-win conclusion. Yes a triple win! Baby gets to stay on the journey of life with a family who would welcome them with great joy and expectation and a lady who can move on in her life without the guilt of abortion. And perhaps while in that choice to keep her baby and walk through the journey of pregnancy (amidst the challenges and sacrifice of leaving school and her job) - find she changes her mind and keeps her baby that is super awesome! I want to help these walk through that journey in my capacity as a paediatrician. I am happy to support this voluntarily. So calling whoever out there who knows anyone in this situation, please contact me! It would be my pleasure to see an unborn baby get a chance in life! I will not hesitate to say I'm pro life.

I was at the HV market the other day queuing for coffee in the early morning. A lady ahead of me I reckon about sixty years turned around and offered me to go ahead of her. Surprised why an older lady would allow me to jump queue - she said to me, "I'm sure  you must be off to work soon and I'm not in a hurry so please go ahead." I couldn't disagree with her and gladly took up her offer. It was a simple gesture but rare and heartwarming to meet such a magnanimous lady. She also showed  her kindness in such a gracious way that I couldn't refuse it. Inspiring and touching. Thank you Aunty.

Trust

Trust - something sadly lacking today because people are  suspicious, confused and disappointed . Vaccine companies are viewed with great mistrust and hence the growing number of parents opting not to do vaccines . But can you trust everything you read on the Internet? Even photos posted may have been tampered by photo shop . So who can we trust and what do entrust ourselves to?

At the end what really matters in the midst of all these choices  then is that we ourselves choose to live by the principles of integrity and be trustworthy . And be granted wisdom and discernment to make right choices as to who and what we choose to base our trust on.

My heart goes out to the victims and families of those affected by the Boston bomb blast. It started me thinking about how unbelievably evil a person could be to even conceive such a plan to take innocent lives. I wonder what that person's childhood and upbringing was like. A stark reminder and wake up call to parents that nurturing good character is far more important that chasing good grades and status in life.
